Los Glaciares National Park
Purposes
|
|
|
|
Besides
offering an imposing landscape and being a great
attraction to travelers all over the world, Los
Glaciares National Park accomplishes many functions
related to preservation and conservation that
are not always known by others.
These purposes aim to promote the public knowledge
of the natural characteristics of the area and
the understanding of their importance. |

General purposes |
|
The
general purposes of the NP are the following: |
|
1. |
Keep a representative
sample of the south-patagonian Andean
ecosystems |
|
assuring the continuity
of the natural process. |
|
2. |
Protect the upper
hydrological sources assuring the maintenance
of the |
|
regional hydrical regulation
process. |
|
3. |
Preserve the wild
beauty, giving an appropriate environment
for the tourist |
|
development. |
|
4. |
Help to develop
tourist and leisure activities, in contact
with nature. |
|
5. |
Encourage and help
to research of the natural and cultural
aspects of the |
|
area |
|

Specific purposes |
|
These
activities are oriented to attend specific matters,
related to the protection of unique species, threatened
species or geographic areas which require the best state
of conservation. The specific purposes are the following:
1. |
Keep a representative sample
of the Magellan humid woods |
|
2. |
Insure the conservation
and protection of the following communities of |
|
special value: |
|
|
A) Communities of restricted distribution
in our country, not represented in other protected
areas:
- Hygrofile Magellan wood.
- Southern crowd layers, with ciprés de las
guaitecas.
B) Tree species of restricted distribution:
Guindo o cohiue de magallanes (Nothofagus
betuloides) and ciprés de las guaitecas(Pilgerodendrom
uviferum).
C) Threatened animal species, endemic or of restricted
distribution:: Huemul(Hippocamelus
bisulcus), pato de los torrentes(Merganetta
armata), choique (Pterocnemia pennata),
piche patagónico (Zaedyus pichiy),
zorro gris chico (Dusicyon griseus).
D) Subandean Steppe: Taking the necessary measures
to help its recovery in order to have steppe areas
free of livestock, as a genetic bank and ecological
model. |

Preserve the Patagonic Continental
Ice and its associated glaciers, keeping |

its natural characters and its
landscape environment. |

Protect and keep in good
state of conservation the area of Mt. Fitz
Roy range |

as a natural scene for the observation
of natural beauty and as well |

mountaineering activities. |
